What is Bariatric Surgery?
Bariatric and metabolic surgery is the most effective treatment for morbid obesity and its comorbidities, significantly surpassing the results of non-surgical treatments. It is performed laparoscopically with 5 to 10 mm incisions, reducing postoperative pain and accelerating recovery. Long-term success depends on a multidisciplinary commitment that includes nutritional support, comprehensive postoperative follow-up, and lifelong supplementation.
Who is it for?
According to the IFSO-ASMBS 2022 international guidelines, it is recommended for individuals with a BMI ≥ 35 kg/m², with or without comorbidities. It is also considered for patients with a BMI between 30 and 34.9 kg/m² who have associated metabolic diseases. Preoperative evaluation includes laboratory tests and assessment by surgeons, endocrinologists, psychologists, and nutritionists to ensure procedure safety.
Our Procedures
Gastric Sleeve (Vertical Gastrectomy)
A restrictive and hormonal procedure in which the gastric fundus is longitudinally resected, leaving a tubular stomach of 150-200 ml. By removing the cells that produce ghrelin (the hunger hormone), appetite is significantly reduced. It is the simplest technique, with shorter surgical time (average 66-87 min) and a lower rate of early complications.
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
A mixed procedure (restrictive and malabsorptive) considered the gold standard for type 2 diabetes control and severe gastroesophageal reflux. It creates a small gastric reservoir of 15-30 ml and reroutes the intestinal transit, achieving superior metabolic control results. Average surgical time of 94-108 minutes.
Results and Quality of Life
Both techniques achieve between 60% and 80% excess weight loss within the first year. Type 2 diabetes remission can reach up to 80% of cases, often before significant weight loss occurs. Patients experience notable improvement in physical function, reduced body pain, increased self-esteem, and greater vitality.

Liquid diet
See moreClear and complete liquid diet. Includes broths, strained juices, sugar-free gelatin, and protein drinks. The goal is to maintain hydration while the stomach heals.
Soft foods & purees
See moreSoft and pureed foods are introduced: blended cooked vegetables, soft fruits, sugar-free yogurt, and mashed proteins. Very small portions, chewing slowly.
Chicken & fish
See moreSmall portions of cooked chicken and fish, scrambled eggs, and soft cheese are added. Protein is prioritized to promote healing and preserve muscle mass.
Normal textures
See moreGradual reintroduction of red meats and normal textures. Controlled portions continue, along with lifelong vitamin supplementation (iron, B12, calcium, folic acid) and periodic follow-up.
Walking on the same day of surgery is recommended to prevent thrombosis. Follow-up includes lifelong supplementation and periodic check-ups with the multidisciplinary team.
Safety and Common Myths
Laparoscopic bariatric surgery has a mortality rate of 0.03% to 0.2%, lower than the risk of remaining obese. It only leaves 5 millimetric incisions, not large scars. It is not just cosmetic: it is a functional surgery that reverses chronic diseases and extends life expectancy. Patients with diabetes and hypertension benefit the most from the intervention.
